Pro Coro Canada
Pro Coro Canada, under the direction of conductor Michael Zaugg is excited to perform “The German Requiem” by Johannes Brahms, a monumental choral work considered one of the greatest pieces of classical music.
This composition, consisting of seven movements, is a requiem not based on Latin texts but on selected passages from the Luther Bible in German. Brahms’ Requiem focuses on comforting, giving hope, and encouraging the living, inspired by personal losses and the death of his mother.
The music is rich in melodic beauty, harmonic refinement, and emotional depth, and the combination of a large choir, two pianos, and soloists creates a powerful and moving musical experience.
Brahms’ “German Requiem” is a masterpiece that addresses both spiritual and aesthetic dimensions, offering an unforgettable journey through the human soul. As a counterpoint, the first part of the concert features newer choral music that shines a modern light onto the story of Good Friday and Easter.
